Unless he has had them pierced recently with a 6 gauge needle, I can't imagine that he would have any serious issues having them out for a few hours, or even a day or so. At the very worst, he'll shrink a gauge or two. Having you, if possible, reinsert the jewelry after the procedure with a nicely lubed taper would minimize any trauma to the piercings.
